Fire Protection Engineering for California Buildings

Our engineers apply both science and engineering principles to protect people, property, and their environments from the harmful and destructive effects of fire and smoke.

Life and Fire safety are critical components of any buildings design, modernization, and scheduled functionality testing.

The following is a list of services offered by Engineous Group in this field.

  • Fire Sprinkler Systems
  • Standpipe Systems
  • Hydraulic Calculations
  • Fire Suppression Systems
  • Detention and Alarm Systems
  • Smoke Evacuation and Controls
  • Emergency Communication Systems
  • Code Conformance
  • Engineering Reviews
  • Cost Estimating

We provide fire protection engineering throughout California, including Los Angeles and the Inland Empire.

Codes and standards that govern this work

Fire protection design in California is governed by the California Fire Code (Title 24, Part 9)
and the California Building Code, which adopt and amend the NFPA standards the discipline is built
on, including NFPA 13 for automatic sprinkler systems and NFPA 14 for standpipes. Sprinkler
hydraulic calculations must demonstrate that the system delivers the required density at the
required pressure using the water supply actually available at the site, which is why early
coordination with the civil and plumbing design matters.

Coordination with the rest of the building

Fire protection is rarely a standalone scope. Sprinkler mains compete for the same ceiling space
as ductwork, conduit and plumbing, and life safety systems interface with electrical power and
controls. Because we engineer the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems as well, that
coordination happens inside one design team rather than across three.

Where this work has been applied

Fire and life safety design runs through our work on
hotels,
assisted living facilities,
public schools and
historic buildings, where retrofitting
suppression into existing structure carries its own constraints.
